Trump Cult crackpottery doesn't kill just Republicans

If Republican obdurate ignorance and stubbornness just hurt and killed Republicans, that would be a terrible tragedy for our country.  BUT, they hurt and kill all of us.

It is incomprehensible that a large percentage of Republicans refuse to wear masks and socially distance during a killer pandemic.  But, they do. They seem to think that it has something to do with manhood and freedom?

It is incomprehensible that a large percentage of Republicans refuse to get vaccinated against a killer pandemic.  But they do.  They seem to think it has something to do with manhood and freedom?

If only their "tribe" died as a result, well, you can say they brought it on to themselves.  BUT, when they get infected, they infect us all.

And they are just too damned ignorant/bullheaded/malicious to even feel remorse for their "politically incorrect" defiance.

It was clear that way back in 2016 it was a badge of honor for the Trump Cult to be "politically incorrect" - which just meant they were proud to display their crudity and bigotry - anything to "own the libs", anything to offend the libs, anything to scare the libs.  In your face outraqe, what fun! how daring! how brave! how manly!

I guess the natural logical progression of their "political incorrectness" is to ignore safety precautions against the pandemic virus.  Hehehehehe  - I guess they are showing us ... hehehehehe ... they aren't going to be told what to do by "the libs".

NOBODY IS GOING TO TELL THEM WHAT TO DO, by golly, by gum, nosireebob...nope...nope...nobody nohow noway....

Right Wing Media Outrage Bubble fools Republican lawmakers

The Right Wing Media Outrage Bubble is good for one thing - getting a devoted media audience.  It started with Rush Limbaugh and Roger Ailes, both dead now, and carried forward by screaming clones and dittoheads.

The odd thing is that Republican Politicians don't understand that what gets a good sized audience on radio and TV does not get a majority of votes in elections.  If Hannity or Carlson get 3 - 4 million viewers, that's enough of an audience on cable TV to make them quite wealthy.  But Joe Biden got 81,000,000 votes in 2020.  That is a lot more than 4 million.

So, Republicans are playing to the Right Wing Media Outrage Bubble rather than to real people.  The historian Heather Cox Richardson reveals the divide nicely:

"Americans as a whole do not like the policies of current-day Republican lawmakers.

  • Seventy-seven percent of us like the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan, and yet not a single Republican voted for it.
  • Eighty-four percent of us like background checks for gun purchases, and yet that policy is anathema to Republicans.
  • Seventy-nine percent of us want the government to fix our roads, bridges, railroads, and ports.
  • Seventy-one percent of us want the government to make sure we all have high-speed internet.
  • Sixty-eight percent of us want the government to replace our lead pipes,
  • the same percentage as people who want the government to support renewable energy with tax credits.
  • Sixty-four percent of us want to pay for these things by increasing taxes on corporations and big businesses.

Republican lawmakers oppose all of these popular measures." (Bullets added)

The Right Wing Media Outrage Bubble has no philosophy or policies, other than as brief lip service, but rather have only to prey upon the hatreds and fears of the more extreme elements of conservatives. Whip up the Base! Be proudly offensive and crude!  Own the Libs! And the politicians are ruled by the eye captivating propaganda circus rather than ideas or actual facts rather than disinformation and bullshit.

This is made confusing for Rep Lawmakers of course because the Former Guy only ever played to the Propaganda Circus and won in 2016 (kind of won, won the Electoral College, lost the popular).

There will not be a Trump successor runnning for office because the Former Guy is a one off - completely bat-shit crazy stupid loon.  WWF meets GodzillaYou can't copy that.  And there is not really any Republican policy agenda that will get the MAGA crazies to the polls.

I think the Republican Party has had its last president.  The Former Guy will likely be in prison by 2024 as a result of a lifetime of corruption, fraud, and crime. And there will be no viable successor.

Russia attacks America, kills 450,000 Americans

Ex president Trump’s medical advisor on the pandemic, Dr Brix, just said that the first 100,000 COVID-19 deaths could be expected as everyone was trying to understand what was happening, but the next 450,000 deaths were due to Trump incompetence/?/inaction/sabotage?  Her quote:

All of the rest of them,” she said, referring to almost 450,000 deaths, “in my mind, could have been mitigated or decreased substantially had the administration acted more aggressively.”

Trump’s stupidity is easy to blame for this, but I think it was worse than that. I think he was acting at the direction of his master, Putin, who was and is waging war on America.  Putin wants to destroy America, and destroy democracy around the world.

If Russia sent a nuke into an American city that killed 450,000 Americans we would all know we were at war.  But he sent a vicious clown with the brains of a turnip, and strict instructions to tear America apart.

Sorry to say, we are at war, and I thank goodness that our current president, Joe Biden knows it.

Magicians dream , scientists and engineers build

We are, of course, in perilous climate change times - forest firestorms in the West, power plant killing freezes in the South, 100 year floods in Australia, killing off of coral reefs due to heat stress, etc. etc. etc.

Our approach has to be two pronged - less production of carbon and methane - and more pulling of carbon from the atmosphere.  There are three projects that I have recently read about that give me hope.

You pull carbon out of the atmosphere by adding greenery on the ground.  There are scientists, the "Weather Makers", looking to turn the Sanai desert green in Egypt, and they have a plan, and the Egyptian government may be interested in doing this.  These scientists were inspired by a documentary- "Green Gold" - that showed that China did just that in a desert within their country.  I have seen a similar documentary on Netflix but I don't recall it's name.  Can you imagine if the greening of the desert in the Sanaii succeeds, what the very wealthy Middle Eastern nations might do to the terrible deserts they inhabit?

There is another wonderful documentary on Netflix named "Kiss the Ground" that shows smaller projects in the U.S. about returning desertified land back to lush agriculture with green farming practices.  Very worth seeing.

A second idea is about an economic way to reduce the production of carbon by covering the 1500+ miles of Calilfornia aqueducts that transport northern california water south to the rest of California.  Cover the aqueducts with floating solar panels. This, of course, produces non carbon producing power during the day, and it also reduces the evaporation of water from these extensive canals.  Pretty deeply researched project and I hope it moves forward.

I read a third article about the development of plasma jet engines to fly our airplanes - using a generated electromagnetic field to create a plasma that propels the jet.

Not all of us are environmental scientists.  Not all of us are green power engineers. But all of us can and do dream of reversing the desertification of the planet. We can all dream of environmentally supportive power generation.  We can all dream of the human race waking up to the reality that the environment, that nature, that wild forests and jungles, and rivers, and oceans are as essential to our human survival as strong economies and functioning beneficial governments and industries.

I am pretty sure of one thing: the smartest kids in MIT, Stanford, UC Berkeley, Cal Tech, England, France, India and all around the world are dreaming of coming up with magnificent breakthroughs in green energy, environmental restoration, carbon capture, energy storage, etc. etc. etc.  They are not wasting their time dreaming of developing more environmental damage.

We dream, they make it real.  By our dreaming it, we become much more accepting of the changes that the new science will produce.

Why do I keep thinking it is going to end?

A young white Southern Christian man slaughtered 8 people in a racist attack on Asian women.  This is hard.  Another white Christian killer.  When will it end?  Why do I think it will end?  Another white Christian bigoted killer terrorist.  It goes on and on.

Why?

What do Fundamentalist Christians in the South (and around the country) get taught?

  • To admire and perhaps worship a racist, authoritarian, fascist president - as a model of what it is to be a man.
  • That as Christians they are persecuted even though they are the rulers not the ruled
  • That they have been chosen by God Himself to work God's will - as defined by the racist authoritarian preachers propagandizing them
  • That they are "in the world but not of the world" - and the world is anyone different than their white selves
  • That sex is sinful and Satan tempts virtuous young men to sin - and therefore women are tools of Satan
  • That to be a good manly Christian they need guns and the willingness to kill
  • That God is vindictive, and so should you be vindictive
  • That Christ will return and burn the sinful world to the ground because the non White Christian world deserves to be destroyed by --- Jesus?

People are being taught, propagandized, brainwashed into believing that a twisted destructive model of manhood and spirituality are goals to attain to.  This has nothing to do with the actual teachings and life of Jesus Christ himself, whose radical message to the world was of gentleness and love.

Put the teachings of Christ into the hands of a violent chauvinist white supremacist on a pulpit and you get white supremacist Christian terrorists who kill and kill and kill and....

Jim Crow is alive and ill in the Republican Party

After the killing of Reconstruction in the South in 1876 by withdrawing Federal Troops that were enforcing it, the white supremacist South disenfranchised and terrorized blacks and instituted the reality of Jim Crow.  One main feature of Jim Crow was keeping blacks from the polls.

Tragically, Jim Crow is rising again.  Suppression of black votes seems to be pretty much the only strategy that today's Republican Party has.  The most recent and obvious example is the statement by Arizona Republican John Kavanaugh:

"...we don’t mind putting security measures in that won’t let everybody vote — but everybody shouldn’t be voting... “Quantity is important, but we have to look at the quality of votes, as well.”

"Quality" of votes?  You mean only white votes?  Yup.  Hard to be more blatant than that.

The Supreme Court made a tragic mistake (?) when they overturned the Voting Rights Act in the Shelby county v. Holder ruling in 2013.  They claimed the racism was gone and the "previously racist" states could be trusted going forward.

Nope.

The restraints were taken off those states and racist voter suppression measures were enacted with gusto - from closing polling places in black and brown communities, to requiring onerous voter ID requirements, to preventing early voting, to restricting mail in voting, etc.  Jim Crow all over again.

The pretense is that the Republicans are nobly protecting against voter fraud.  But the Reps have been trying and FAILING to prove voter fraud for decades.

Most infamously, Kris Kobach of Kansas pretty much based his whole career on the racist claim that black and brown people were committing massive voter fraud.  He failed to prove it over and over again. His most recent most consequential failure was when Trump had him head up a commission to find voter fraud and disbanded it as quietly as possible in 2018 without producing a report.  The report, if honest, would have simply said that they could not find meaningful voter fraud.

So, what to do?  LIE.

The Former Guy in the White House came up with the Big Lie that he won the election in a landslide and voter fraud stole the election from him.  Big Lies end up killing people and this one still could.  But, for now, Republicans are content to just do everything they can to suppress black and brown votes.

Jim Crow rides again.

Reaganism is dead, Trump killed it

The basic idea of Reaganism was "government is not the solution; government is the problem."  The financial crisis of 2008 proved that wrong (deregulation of banking almost destroyed the world economy) but it wasn't until the idiotic Trump presidency that the wrongness of a destroyed government became obvious - without a government led attack on COVID-19 the pandemic killed over half a million Americans and ravages the world.

If Obama had still been president in 2017, or if Hillary had been, the Federal Government would have very likely moved into a warlike footing against the virus with the Defense Authorization Act being used to flood the country with effective PPE, virus testing advancements, and quick response vaccine research, distribution, and implementation.  The only thing Trump did right was spend Federal Government funds on Operation Warpspeed to develop vaccines (contrary to basic Reaganism idea of shackling of the government) but he failed to follow up with distribution and implementation.  Hard to find things more damaging than obsolete dogma.

So, the country turned its suffering eyes to Biden, who promised and is implementing an active, effective Federal Government led response to the pandemic, to child povery, to racial inequality, to the many things that only government can do and which private industry is incapable of doing.  I have mentioned often that we need both capitalism (private industry innovation and drive) and socialism (government boundaries for safety, scienetific research, economic policy direction, economic safety net, public benefits via public spending).

Perhaps Reaganism was vital to overcome the Stagflation of the '70s and defeat Soviet communism, but today is very different from 40 years ago. Reaganism is totally incapable of solving the thee greatest crises of today - the Pandemic, Climate Change, and crippling economic inequality.  These require the Federal Government.

Reagan changed politics 40 years ago (I voted for him twice).  He limited goverment and boosted business.

Now the country wants to change again, to meet today's world - a competent, expertize driven government to deal with today's world.

Maybe we should thank the astonishingly ignorant and incompetent Former Guy in the White House - he gutting the government of expertise, science, diplomacy, money, and purpose.  The result was the Pandemic raging while the Former Guy tweeted about what a wonderful job HE was doing, and tweeting about how much he hated Libs.

America is on a new path.  Excellent.

I was wrong about welfare

It turns out that welfare to the poor actually gives them a hand up. It’s not just a handout.  It helps people find and do work rather than incentivizes not working.  Reagan was wrong.  I was wrong when I was in my Republican years.

Stockton CA just did an experiment where they gave $500 per month to the poor. It made a huge difference in their lives, including the ability to find employment.  Annie Lowery of the Atlantic wrote an article -  “Stockton’s Basic-Income Experiment Pays Off”.

From the article:

“ More work, less destitution, more family stability, less strained social networks, less stress, fewer incidences of homelessness, fewer skipped meals: This is what welfare could give the country.

Andrew Lang’s idea of a Universal Basic Income May be the best thing to do after all.  Especially in the coming world of ever increasing career obsolescence as a result of technology.

America has been lost in obsolete dogmas long enough. Time to rethink. Follow the data.

The Republican Party spirals down into overt Nazism at CPAC

Just when you thought Republicans couldn’t get any more disgusting, we get CPAC (Conservative Political Action Conference).  What did CPAC do to symbolically communicate to the world who they are?  Well...

First they created the stage in the shape of a Nazi rune... Nazi... Nazi...

Next they created a (this is so strange) Golden Trump Statue.... Golden Trump Statue... Holden Trump Statue...

See pictures.

Just because they are spiraling into oblivion doesn’t mean they aren’t still dangerous.  Watch out. When people lose power they often strike out to do as much damage as they can. Witness the murderous assault on the Capitol on 1/6/20 trying to overthrow the U.S. government.

Did you hear what Trump DID today?!?!

Did you hear what Trump DID today?

Neither did I....

Isn’t that absolutely WONDERFUL?

Cyber attack

My company is under a cyber attack.  My computer has been off for a week and my ability to do business is grinding to a halt.  I don’t know who the attacker is, but I am mindful of a huge story from December and January.

Russia successfully massively infiltrated America’s cyberworlds - the U S Military, State Department, White House, NSA, most Fortune 500 companies, the largest Accounting firms, Universities, etc.  It put a “backdoor” “zero-day” software into a product called “Solar Winds” routine update that affected 18,000 customers.  This happened in March 2020.  Catastrophic.  What else happened that March?

Oh yes, The Trump Administration dramatically slashed the budget for CISA (Cybersecurity And Infrastructure Security Agency).  I have long thought it was blindingly obvious that Trump was/is a Russian agent under the control of the FSR (KGB)

I have just started a book about Russia’s cyberwarfare - “This is How They Tell Me the World Ends” by Nicole Perlroth.  Terrifying.

Russia warmed up and tried out their weapons on poor little Ukraine - shut down the power grid in December - twice,  shut down a nuclear power system to where they had no idea what’s was happening to the plant and couldn’t even measure radiation.  The plant tech got on a loudspeaker “...and told anyone who could hear to rip their computers out of the wall”

I don’t know that Russia is attacking my smallish corporation.  Maybe we are just collateral damage of a larger American target, or maybe it’s not Russia at all.

But the recent devastation of Texas when Climate Change driven cold shut down their power, we can see how vulnerable our power grids are.  The trouble is a cyber attack won’t be cured by warm weather.

With the COVID-19 pandemic, an attempted violent overthrow of an election, and escalating Climate Change America is in a strange place.

We are very vulnerable.

Texas power needs to winterize

Climate Change’s effect in California has been to change the way the state deals with forest management to try to prevent endless firestorm seasons.

Now Climate Change has pushed the Polar Vortex all the way down through Texas and is crippling the power grid.  The oil and gas industry is on a propaganda campaign to blame green energy like wind turbines, but that is just silly.

Wind turbines work just fine in Utah, Minnesota, and Antarctica. They just have to be winterized - heated blades and antifreeze, etc.

The bigger problem in Texas is apparently freezing natural gas pipelines so that the fuel couldn’t get to the gas fired power plants. It seems that Texas long ago created their own power grid so as avoid government regulation.  Too bad, could be that regulation might have forced more farsighted engineering.

Just as California has had to change its forest management policies, Texas and the South need to winterize their power generation and power grid. It would help, also, if Texas would open up their power grid to the U.S. so they could receive power from other states during an emergency, just like the rest of us do.

It is commonly said that “No Man is an Island.” Same for states, we are all connected even if some of us think that it is some kind of failing to receive help.  Time for Texas to prepare for Climate Change.

Just to finish with the obvious - the Polar Vortex instability is part of the Climate Change, which is caused in large part by burning fossil fuels.  I would like to see Texas be in the forefront of developing sustainable green energy that does just fine when it is below zero and when it is above 100, because that is the new climate for Texas.

Careers can be had in green as well as fossil fuel industries.

76.6 Million

By the way, the 57 Senators who voted to convict Trump during the impeachment trial represent 76.6 MILLION more people than the 43 Senators that voted to acquit.  The difference still falls short of 2/3 of the country, but it reveals a structural problem.

This shows a very real problem with the whole idea of the Senate. When a state like Wyoming with a little more than half a million gets two Senators, and California with about 40 million also gets only two Senators, you know that time has moved on to the point where the Founders’ vision has been distorted beyond what they would recognize and they would likely disapprove. As I have written before, I believe the invention of the Senate was a needed compromise to bribe the slave States to join the Union. It gave them disproportionate representation in the Federal Government. Then the expansion west into very lightly populated territories gave mining and ranching interests disproportional influence.

Maybe it’s time to abolish the Senate? Won’t happen without a new Constitutional Convention, which won’t happen, of course. But there is a problem in our democracy when an unpopular minority runs the country.

We need the Constitution to protect the minority against the tyranny of the majority. But we also need the Constitution to protect the majority against the tyranny of the minority. I don’t know how to do this.

I think it is just fine that the bulk of the Republican Party is still trapped in the slavish Trump Cult because I think that the Trump ship has hit a iceberg and is in the process of sinking. I hope that an honorable Republican wing can rise up and take over.  But I think the Party will just split and fade away. They cling desperately to power through blatant gerrymandering and blatant voter suppression but that can’t last for long.

As I have mentioned before, there are deep structural issues we seem to unable to address - catastrophic climate change (Texas power grid failures due to unprecedented cold, California firestorms due to unprecedented heat and drought, hurricanes, floods, ice melts, etc.), and dangerously widening economic inequality (history showed us the French guillotine and the Bolshevik revolution as results of previous too much disparity).  We need very fresh approaches, but we seem to be stuck in a system that preserves both killing pollution and economic chasms.

The Pro-fascists declare theselves - the ProFa Party

So the Republican Senators did what was expected (except for 7 who had the character to admit the undeniable).  They announced that the Republican Party now is actually the Pro-fascist Party.  Maybe they should name themselves the ProFa Party.  The Republican Senators showed that succumbing to the fascist wing of the Party, also known as the Trump Cult, they have declared themselves to be fascists themselves.

Fascism:

Dictionary.com    --   Noun  - a governmental system led by a dictator having complete power, forcibly suppressing opposition and criticism, regimenting all industry, commerce, etc., and emphasizing an aggressive nationalism and often racism.

The evidence of the ex-president’s relentless stoking his cult to riotous anger, calling them to the Capitol on January 6, and sending them to the Capitol Building with orders to “be strong” was overwhelming and uncontestable.  The House Mangers made their case with more than was needed.  The defense tried to say it was freedom of speech to send rioters into the Capitol to kill people, and that to deny their fascist leader of that right was part of the terrible left wing “cancel culture”, and that the House used the wrong verb - "incitement" - in their charge.

Good grief.  It was pathetic.  But 43 Republican Senators gave their “terrifying” fascist leader a pass, and gave him and future wannabe fascists permission.

But, on the bright side, the Republican Senators did the most wonderful and needed thing that can be done in America, they destroyed the Republican Party.  Republicans will have to split in two – Republicans vs. ProFas.

Thousands of registered Republicans have left the Republican Party.  What’s left is the dregs.

The newly formed ProFa Party can spend their time enthusiastically fighting the AntiFa civilians in public performance marches carrying confederate flags, Trump flags, white supremacist symbols, assault weapons, and baseball bats.  They can shout racism and threats.  They can display their manly manly manly tempers.  Oh my!

They won’t have a whole lot else to do because the Republican Party will oppose them as well as the Democratic Party, and they may get a few nuts into Congress but they will just become a worn out side show and people will grow tired and switch the channel and the show will be cancelled – just like Trump’s “The Apprentice” was cancelled for fizzling out.

This will take a couple of election cycles, I suppose, but as with the Whigs...

What an appalling episode of Trump in America this has been.

Catching up on the Senate Trial - Even I am shocked

I have been following Trump's fascist attempt to stay in power pretty closely over the last year, but even I am shocked by the detailed evidence presented by the House Impeachment Managers yesterday.  I've been catching up on recordings of yesterday's presentations.

Trump's months' long incitement of his Cult to set the stage for his final call to action on January 6 with claims that the election would be and then was rigged was more than just a bad loser making an excuse for his loss.  He knew what he was doing and he called for violence to keep himself in power. He needed to stay in power, not just because of his psychopathic ego that can't admit defeat, he needed to stay in power to stay out of prison for his criminal career of tax evasion, bank fraud, money laundering, campaign violations, and who knows what else.

I knew all that.  But to witness the timeline of events, including the sustained and brutal violence by a well organized and well planned right wing terrorist insurrection is really disturbing.  I have wept in rage and sorrow, while watching, that one complete nincompoop of a man could cause so much damage to my beloved America.

The right wing terrorists were out to kill the Vice President, to please their cult leader, and to kill the Speaker of the House, to please their cult leader, and literally to kill anyone they could get their hands on.  They wounded 140 officers, killed one, two more died.  The Capitol Police were astonishingly brave heroes.  We saw video after video proving their heroism.

The terrorists came within minutes and within yards of getting the VP, Senators, and Congress-people.  They clearly shouted their intentions to hang or kill them.

It was terrifying. And that is the essence of fascism, is it not?  To dominate with terror?  To seize power and keep it with violence and terror?

I have no idea how any Republican Senator could possibly vote to acquit the ex-president after seeing the detail of the time line in preparation for, prior to, and during the attack designed to find them and kill them.

This is not an exaggeration.  To any who think this was just a mob that got out of control, or was some kind of spontaneous event that came from nowhere, the only explanation is that they have not watched the evidence being presented.  The ex-president is a psychopath and he tried to kill people to stay in power (correction, he did kill people to stay in power)

Find the ex-president guilty, please.  Prison for all involved, please.

Will the Republican Party declare their guilt?

I just saw the perfect summary of this week’s Senate trial of the former president.  It is a imaginary conversation where Piglet asks “If they don’t convict him does that mean that he is innocent?  Pooh Bear answers “No Piglet...it means they are all guilty”

It would mean that they approve of and want fascist terror to rule America.

Lack of government was the problem

Ronald Reagan famously campaigned on the idea that "Government isn't the solution - government is the problem". And that idea stuck for decades. If he was right in 1980, Trump proved that idea catastrophically wrong in his four years of mismanagement horror.

Most notably, his astonishingly incompetent federal response to COVID-19 has caused at least twice the number of deaths than would have happened if he had not largely dismantled the pandemic response team that had been set up by Obama, and if he had used the power and leadership of the Federal Government to provide masks, tests, and vaccines using tools like the Defense Authorization Authority of government to lead the country and the world in stopping the disease.

But, we have a new government, and competence and skill are being put into place in Biden's appointments. People with experience, character, and commitment to the success of their agencies rather than inexperience, lack of character, and commitment to the destruction of their agencies.

His incompetent predecessor did what all tyrants do, he put political loyalists in place to run the government. And like political loyalists all across the world, they had little knowledge or expertise in the organizations they were in charge of.  An example of that is the tyranny in Venezuela, where the oil industry was turned over to men who did not and do not know how to run and oil industry but they do know how to kiss the ass of the tyrant.  Since Venezuela essentially has only one industry, oil, its economy collapsed long ago.

Biden is providing government leadership once again.  Thank goodness. There are many, many things that private enterprise never will and never can do - lack of government was the problem.

Here are some of what he is doing, for which I am grateful:

COVID
  • Require Masks on Federal Grounds and airplanes (just following the science)
  • Stay in the World Health Organization (duh)
  • Accurate virus data (Trump tried to force low virus numbers)
  • Provide scientific guidance on opening schools (replace inconsistent state driven political whims)
  • Student loan moratorium (Even Trump did this one)
  • Coronavirus Testing Board (We need hundreds of millions of quick response tests)
  • Temporary eviction moratoriums (pandemic compassion)
ENVIRONMENT
  • Rejoin the Paris Climate Accord (catastrophic climate change is toooo real)
  • Undo deregulations that harm the environment and cause catastrophic climate change (focus on climate change and polutution)
  • Halts new oil and gas leases on public lands and offshore (time to stop government artificially propping up technologies that are causing catastrophic climate change and are being replaced by green technologies)
  • Halting the Keystone pipeline (puts teeth into commitment to pollution regulations)
BIGOTRY
  • Restoring DACA (they were raised as Americans and should be treated as such)
  • Reverse attempt to defund "sanctuary cities (Undo the racist attacks)
  • Prevent sexual and gender discrimination (macho man primacy is stupid)
  • Reunite families separated at the border (trying to undo racist horrors of T)
  • Cancel Trump's ridiculous emergency building of his border wall (just stupid pandering to racists)
  • Honest census count (reverse previous unconstitutional attempt to exclude the undocumented)
  • Re-establish fair housing policies (undo the racism)
  • Reversing the ban on transgenders in the military (be thankful for patriotism)
SCIENCE
  • Appointed a Director of Science and Technology as a cabinet level position (science to have a major seat at the table for decisions, what a concept!)
We had the misfortune of a president and a Republican Party dedicated to the destruction of government, and it was a nightmare.  Thank goodness for people who are public servants dedicated to the public welfare by providing things that only government can provide.

Expertise is back.  I deeply hope that the Biden Administration can attract the expert scientists, diplomats, and government employees who were forced out of their key and vital jobs by the anti-government nitwits of the previous administration.

Trump loses his lawyers for the Senate trial

The five lawyers who were going to defend Trump in the Senate after being impeached by the House of Representatives have abandoned him.  Apparently, they refused to offer the defense that he demanded of them - that the election was stolen and what he did was proper.

Why? Because lawyers can be disbarred for knowingly lying in court.  And they know, as we all know, that it is a lie, a classic Big Lie, that Trump lost because the election was stolen from him.  The courts have already ruled in about 60 ludicrous lawsuits Trump already tried that there was no evidence of meaningful fraud in the election, ruled that the election was not stolen from him.

Of course, Trump has decades of experience where he has had others incriminate themselves on his behalf - for example, his long time personal lawyer and intimidator, Michael Cohen, who ended up going to prison for campaign violation for bribing two women during the final months of the 2016 election to keep them quiet about extramarital sex he had had with them. Cohen went to prison, and mused that it was strange that he rather than Trump was in prison since it wasn't Cohen who got the blow job.

The five lawyers who walked out on Trump supposedly were going to offer a defense that it was unconstitutional to try a president for an impeachable offense after he had left office, so the trial should be thrown out.  And, indeed, 45 Republican Senators voted that the trial was unconstitutional and should not happen.  They lost 55 - 45 of course, but let's pause a moment about this vote.

What is or is not constitutional is not a matter to be decided by elected officials influenced by public opinion of voters they are trying to woo for the advancement of their own careers.  Constitutionality is a higher realm of scholarship than political jockeying.

The impeachment was clearly Constitutional since he was impeached while in office.  The trial does not simply determine whether he be removed from office at the time of a guilty conviction, but it determines whether a person is to be removed from office forever.  Mr. Trump clearly should be on trial to determine whether leading/exhorting/inciting/promoting/causing/intimidating/inspiring a violent insurrection to overthrow an election is cause for removing him from office forever.  Good grief, if trying to overthrow a fair election isn't impeachable, what is?

By the way, weren't the lawyers implicitly conceding that Trump was guilty by going to the only defense available to them - that the trial was "unconstitutional" and should be thrown out?  If you can't defend the innocence I guess the only recourse is to try to dismiss the trial.

It would be especially gratifying to have Trump show up in the Senate trial to defend himself and be able to witness a "Caine Mutiny" type of melt down into paranoia and insanity on the witness stand for all to see.  Who knows, maybe even the Trump Cult would finally see his reality rather than his "Brand" and turn away in disgust and despairing recognition that they have been played.

We did not have a peaceful transfer of power

I am very grateful that we had a peaceful innauguration of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris yesterday, but I just want to remember that we did NOT have a peaceful tranfer of power from the previous administration.

Trump had his right wing terrorists attack the Capitol on January 6, 2021.  Five people died.  The terrorists attempted to find and hang Vice President Michael Pence for refusing to overturn the votes of the states during the day's Electoral College acceptance of the Electoral College votes certifying Biden as president.

The terrorists also were looking to find and kill the Democratic Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi.

The terrorists came with zip ties to capture and hold hostage members of Congress until they got their way and had the election overturned and their cult leader, Trump, reinstalled as president. What was their plan, to execute them one at a time until they got the election overturned?

The House of Representatives impeached him the next week for incitement of insurrection.  He goes on trial in the Senate soon.  I think he has so threatened and offended the Legislative Branch that there will be the needed 17 Republican Senators to vote to find him guilty.  And he will never again be able to hold public office.  And he will lose his grip on his Trump Cult.  And he will spend the rest of his life defending himself in court for the many crimes of his life, and/or spending much of the rest of his life in well earned prison sentences.

It is not nice to try to kill your Vice President and the Speaker of the House.  Prison please.

It was not a peaceful transfer of power.  It was a violent attempt to overthrow an elected President of the United States of America.  And it failed.

Thank God.

Possibilities

I was moved and inspired by Biden's inauguration. I was especially moved when he was addressing about 1000 people who were joining his administration on Zoom just prior to swearing them in.  He said he had had a private dinner with the leader of China who asked him to define America to him.  He did it in one word - POSSIBILITIES.

"Xi "asked me in a private dinner, he and I, and we each had an interpreter. He said can you define America for me, and I said yes and I meant it.

"I said I can do it in one word, one word: possibilities. We believe anything's possible if we set our mind to it, unlike any other country in the world."

How wonderful to have a president who sees our wonderful country as a place of hope and .... possibilities.

We are moving out of the toxic nightmare of right wing hate and paranoia.  Thank goodness.

The same old American sin

America just keeps committing the same old sin, over and over and over – white supremacy. Slavery morphed into the Jim Crow South, which recently morphed into the Supreme Court sanctioned Republican suppression of votes by eliminating polling places, demanding hard for some to get voter IDs without providing free or cheap IDs in black and brown neighborhoods, interfering with registration drives, preventing motor-voter automatic voter registration, etc. etc. etc. – anything the Republicans can think of to suppress and reduce voting by non-whites.

White Supremacy - America’s endless sin.  I am really tired of it.  On this day after the Martin Luther King holiday (not honored by much of America) it is time to see what incredible damage this empty and mistaken myth of white supremacy has caused.

Of course, the main effect of white supremacy was and is to do everything possible to crush people of color and guarantee white rule in America.  That attempt to crush and diminish people of color has only grown stronger under the presidency of the racist president, Donald Trump.

One of the destructive ways this played out was for the South to insist on making all the states in early America’s expansion to the West, from Kansas onward, to become slave states.  The Abolitionists would not allow that. In the 1856 debates Lincoln outed Illinois Senator Douglas as one who opposed slavery on moral grounds even though he spoke of protecting slavery in the South, and in the election of 1860 the pro-slavery vote split between Douglas and the Southern Breckinridge, and Lincoln was elected president in 1860.  South Carolina and six other states succeeded from the Union before Lincoln was even sworn in.  Nearly 700,000 died in that Civil War.

So, the slaves were freed by the Civil War and the 13th and 14th Amendments to the Constitution.

And then the election of 1876 happened and the Republican candidate, Hayes,  bargained away black freedom by agreeing to pull troops out of the South, which were necessary to enforce the Reconstruction laws, in order to win the election. And the KKK South ruled with Jim Crow terror of blacks for nearly a century.

So, slavery, the Jim Crow South, and modern suppression of black and brown votes are the obvious damages the American sin of white supremacy has and continue to have on America.

Anything else?  I think yes.  I think the deliberate unfairness of the Electoral College, and the deliberate unfairness of representation in the Senate, are other damages of white supremacy.

In order to form the United States of America, the free states had to bribe the slave states by allowing two bodies of the legislature – the House of Representatives which is populated according to the population of each state, and the Senate which has two Senators from each state regardless of population.  And then, the Electoral College for each state has its number of votes to match the number of Senators (2) and number of Representatives it has.  So, the Electoral College over-represents small states.

And, of course, the Senate preposterously over-represents smaller states, whereby the largest state, California, has 2 Senators despite a population of 40 million people, and Wyoming also has two Senators which has only a little over half a million people.

Whites, by the way, are not superior to people of color.  The more obvious that becomes (as for example when blacks, browns, yellows, reds, women, gays, etc move more competently and excellently and more into prominent roles in science, arts, government, military, judiciary, law enforcement, etc) the white supremacists become more insecure, frightened, and hysterical and do amazingly foolish things like elect a mentally ill TV reality star whose only real claim to fame is racism and false hype of marginal to non-existent business success.

White Europeans (including primarily the English in early America) conquered the world by force because of the geographical accident of living on the land that first spawned agriculture and thus first spawned the technology of ships, guns, and diseases that allowed them to conquer the world.  And of course, they had to be cruel enough to think that killing, crushing, and exploiting the less technologically advanced peoples was just a fine thing to do – and they actually quoted the bible to justify their cruelty and inhumanity. Good grief!

So, I am really sick and tired of America’s sin of believing in the false notion of white supremacy being repeated over and over and over.  The time has come to wave goodbye to it and leave it behind in the “dustbin of history”.

Lack of Good Faith Law needed

Never in my long lifetime have I seen such a lack of good faith on the part of an outgoing administration during a transition to a new administration.  Trump and his people initially refused to cooperate in the transition turnovers and have been making personnel assignments and foreign policy decisions with the express purpose of harming the incoming administration.  This outgoing administration’s only restriction is illegality, with no consideration for respect or honor.  It is the honorable duty of outgoing administrations to graciously turn over the reins, but any form of honor, graciousness, cooperation, or morality is completely missing in Trump and his cultish henchmen.

I hope that the Biden Administration and the new Congress write an enforceable law that says that any decisions, laws, personnel appointments, treaties, breaking of treaties, sanctions against countries, etc. – anything at all that the outgoing administration does – can be overturned with a simple Executive Order by the new Administration with no input from Congress required.  Anything the country would need to do during the transition could be done by the outgoing Administration in consultation and approval of the incoming Administration, so those agreed to actions would not be overturned.

I would call it the Bad Faith Transition law.

Also, I see no need for such a long period between the election and the certification of the election, nor between the certification of the election and the swearing in of the new Administration.  The bad faith of this outgoing Administration shows us that malicious intent can harm the incoming administration, thwart the judgment of the voters, and harm the country.

It seems our Founding Fathers, despite their best efforts to have checks upon bad faith tyrants, missed the harm that can be done by a malicious losing president and his administration after his loss and before the swearing in of his replacement.

What is one to do?

Let’s pretend for a moment that you are a bully, and have been a bully for over half a century, and you have mostly gotten away with it because you could hire the meanest lawyers to attack and destroy all that oppose you.

Let’s pretend for a moment that you know you can get away with anything because if you’re a celebrity they let you do it – whatever “it” is.

Let’s pretend for a moment that you lose, once again, something that you want to win, but because you’re a bully and because you’re a celebrity you think you can get away with it like you always did.

Let’s pretend for a moment that this time, you can’t.  You can’t bully your way out of it.  You can’t get away with it just because you’re a celebrity.

Let’s pretend for a moment that you try something monumentally stupid, like forcefully overthrowing an election, thinking that you will get your way because, well, you always do.

And you don’t.  You don’t get your way.

What do you do? You don’t know what to do.  This is where you normally declare bankruptcy, steal as much as you can, walk away, and let others have their lives destroyed as you go on to the next corrupt  thing.

But you can’t.

Let’s pretend for a moment that you have spent decades deeply entrenched in a life of crime – from money laundering for foreign oligarchs, or bank fraud, to tax evasion, to stealing from you own charities, to rigging elections, to……

And, let’s pretend for a moment that you, with an entire lifetime of corruption to hide, decide to make a run to be the most famous person on the planet.

And, let’s pretend as you do this you do everything you can do to insult and attack those institutions whose profession is to find things out – like the U.S Intelligence Services and the U.S. and World Media.

And, let’s pretend for a moment that you are caught, over and over and over again, but because you held such a powerful political office, and because you had a voting base that thought you were a god of some sort, you thought you would get away with it forever.

But, you were wrong.

Oops.  A lifetime finally catches up with you.  And, you know what? A lot of the people that you terrified into supporting you actually never liked you  - they just used you, or couldn’t say and do what they wanted to to you, or were just waiting for you to finally go away.

And now, you have gone away.  And you are going to face the consequences of decades of greed, corruption, cruelty, and stupidity, because that is a that you are – a summary of greed, corruption, cruelty, and stupidity.

Welcome to the rest of your life, Mr. ex-President.

Trump impeached, again

Trump's basic strategy was to spew a firehose of lies, disinformation, corruption, crimes, assaults, constitutional offenses etc. day after day after day, on the hope that no one would have the time to pick any one of them and hold him accoutable.  The idea being that there had been so many other atrocities after the one that is chosen that it seemed too minor to just prosecute the one.  And that worked pretty well for him because he had a Trump Cult base that just thought he was the cat's meow.  Appalling, but I guess that is just the way cults are.

Well, guess what? When he called for riotous crowds to arrive on January 6,2021 to disrupt and overturn the the recording of certified Electoral College votes in the Capitol, and then went before his mob in the morning and exhorted them to be very brave and change the count, he actually did something that has never happened in the history of American democracy - he not only refused to accept the vote, but he sent a mob to overturn the vote, and to overturn it with violence.

Well, it turns out the when the Senators and Congresspeople have their lives threatened for simply accepting the results of an election, they aren't happy about it.  The House of Representatives voted today, including 10 Repiublicans, to impeach Donald J Trump.  Again.

Mitch McConnell in his last, and again disgraceful act, as head of the Senate announced he will not hold an emergency trial in the Senate.  OK, so what?  The impeachment will go to the Senate later and the president will likely be found guilty of inciting violence to overturn an election, and he will be the only president ever impeached and found guilty.  So he will never be able to hold Federal Office again.  And, wonder of wonders, his power to control his cult and to bully elected Republicans will just shrink away, like the Wicked Witch of the West in the Wizard of Oz, and we can all watch his pathetic orange self collapse and whine "I'm shrinking, I'm shrinking!"

Ta da.

When you make a deal with the devil you may or may not get the deal but you always will get the devil

Early in the Trump rise to political power in the Republican Party I wrote that conservatives should know that making deals with the devil never works out because though you may or may not get the deal you will always get the devil (called a Faustian Bargain).  That is where the Republicans are today – they are stuck with the “devil” – Trump.  He has only had one priority in his entire life – himself – and he did and will destroy everyone who was foolish enough to align with him as his fantasy world collapses and he plunges into ruin.

So, evangelicals got their judges, but have branded themselves with the most corrupt and vile political personality in my long lifetime.  The oligarchy got their tax breaks and environmental and financial regulations rolled back, but they have created a monster that has ruined the American brand across the world.

The Republican Party may never recover from this monster – part of the party will always be in the Trump Cult, which means that it will not be in a reality based universe, and part of the party will try to become reality based and try to rejoin the world of politics and reject the world of revolution and overthrow.  I think they may go the way of the Whigs, irreconcilably divided between fantasy and reality.

When you make a deal with the devil, what you get is the devil.  They made the deal, and it is fitting that his insanity and bile is taking them down along with himself.

See the difference?

Trump lost the 2020 presidential election by a Electoral College result of 306 for Biden to 232 for Trump.  He lost the popular vote 46.96% vs 51.33%.

Trump won the 2016 presidential election by the same electoral college result but lost the popular vote by getting 46.1% vs 48.1% for Hillary Clinton.

The losing sides for each was shocked and dismayed.  How did each respond?  Take a look.

2016 - the million womens' march poured hundreds and hundreds of thousands of women, many wearing "pink pussy hats", into the streets of DC and every city across the nation and many around the world.  See photos below.

2020 - at Trump's instigation, about thirty or forty thousand rioters showed up in DC and stormed the Capitol and breached the defenses to force the cessation of the Senators and Congress members from tallying the winning Electoral College votes that certified Biden's win.  This is the first such breach of the Capitol since the British invasion of 1812.  See photos below.

Trump eventually told his cult to go home, but only after telling them that he loved them and declaring that he had won a landslide victory.

This is Trump's legacy, right next to his incompetent response to the COVID-19 pandemic resulting in the loss of about 200,000 people who would have lived had he led a national response to the disease.

These are his final images.  Images of eternal disgracce, a disgrace shared by the horrible Senators, Ted Cruz and Josh Hawley, who decided to contest the results of two states who voted for Biden.  They forced Congress to debate the meritless claims of voting fraud.  They did it as a fundraising ploy for their planned presidential runs in 2024.  By the way, four people died in the melee yesterday.  Disgusting.

By the way, I am really getting tired of looking at the traitorous Confederate flag.

Without Nazis, Hitler was just a nutcase screaming on a corner somewhere

Hitler didn't invent Nazis, he mobilized them, he gave them permission to dominate, recruit, terrorize, rule, and kill.

Same with Trump.  I know there are only a very small percentage of people who identify as Nazis with swastika tattoos, etc.  But there are many more who self identify as white supremacists and racists.  And even more who don't think of themselves as racists but who are.  At any rate, Trump mobilized them to be elected in 2016 and gave them permission to come out of hiding and strut their maliciousness in public, and to vote for him in 2020.

So now, we have an amazingly high number of Republicans who are so tuned into Trump's delusional madness that they say they think the election was stolen from their worshipped leader.  Hard to comprehend - that claim was made by Trump in about 60 lawsuites, all but one of which failed due to lack of any basis in reality.

So now, 11 Republican Senators and about 140 Republican Congress members say they will contest the Electoral College votes validated by each state when they convene on January 6 to certify the Biden victory.  Why?  To appease the "Nazis" of the Republican base (Nazi being a metaphorical term referencing the nut case authoritarian, racist base of the party)

This has never happened before (1876 doesn't count since it was from a time of deep corruption that ended in a "deal" that ended Reconstruction and established the terror of Jim Crow in the South for over a century)

All of this is just a Republican Kabuki Theater on January 6, of course, and the election will not be overturned, and Biden will be confirmed.  But it has two purposes - the first is for politicians to show their "Nazi" base that they are on the same side, and second to try their best to sabotage the Biden presidency with an historical vote of no confidence before he is even sworn in.

I expect Biden, and the team of experts he brings with him, will manage just fine.  But the real issue is whether this little show will destroy the Republican Party.

Going forward, there will be Republican office seekers forced to campaign to the delusional wing of the Party, convinced that Trump's victory was stolen even though all evidence proves that is wasn't.  There is a lot of delusion being fed to that wing of the Party, from climate change denial, to the fantasy that COVID-19 is harmless, to masks and social distancing as a plot to subjugate the freedom of real men and real patriots, etc... just a series of ludicrous delusions.

But, there actually is a real world, and there will have to be Republican office seekers who will try to run reality based campaigns.

The Republican Party is in the process of going the way of the Whigs when is destroyed itself by being both pro-slavery to the South and anti-slavery to the North.  The Republicans will go down with the toxic, delusional ship of Donald Trump.  I don't see how the Party can survive if it is not reality based.
