I used to be a Republican. The Freedom Caucus drove me out off the Republican Party. They were not politicians, they were revolutionaries who only obstructed and did all they could to destroy government. But we need government. So I walked away from the Republican Party. It turns out they are worse than I had realized. They led, at the behest of the Former Guy, the insurrection of January 6, 2022. We have testimony given to the House Select Committee.
Historian Heather Cox Richardson reports:
"We knew that both former energy secretary Rick Perry of Texas and Representative Jim Jordan (R-OH) had texted with Meadows about possible avenues for overturning the election. We knew that Representatives
- Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) and
- Lauren Boebert (R-CO) had recorded videos before the insurrection that suggested they supported it. ...
- Representatives Greene,
- Jordan,
- Boebert,
- Scott Perry (R-PA),
- Louie Gohmert (R-TX),
- Andy Biggs (R-AZ),
- Mo Brooks (R-AL),
- Jody Hice (R-GA),
- Paul Gosar (R-AZ), and
- Debbie Lesko (R-AZ).
The heart of this group was the “Freedom Caucus,” which was organized in 2015 to move the Republican Party farther to the right.
- Its first chair was Jim Jordan;
- its second wasMark Meadows.
- Its third was Andy Biggs.
- Mick Mulvaney, who would go on to Trump’s White House, and
- Ron DeSantis, who is now governor of Florida, were key organizers."
And, by the way, Liz Cheney, Republican from Wyoming, denounces the "Putin Wing" of the Republican Party for supporting Putin's invasion of Ukraine.
And I remember John Boehner, Republican Speaker of the House when the Freedom Caucus first descended on the House. A quote from him:
What they are tearing down is not just "Big Government" but Democracy itself. I deeply hope that they are charged with attempting to overthrow an election and permanently barred from political office per the 14th Amendment, Section 3. And prison seems a proper consequence of trying to end democracy, it seems to me.
